Brogue Shoes

Brogues shoes

The modern Brogue shoe is a low-heeled shoe with detailing patterning (punched holes) on mainly the front of leather upper. The traditional Brogue shoes are said to originated in Ireland and Scotland. Unlike the detailing patterning (punched holes) on mainly the front of leather upper on the modern brogue. The traditional brogues shoes were worn for outdoor work and activities and had punched holes all the way through the shoes. This was so water can drain out of the shoes when gents in the early days would walk over rough wet terrains. Due to this nature the use of brogues was not considered appropriate to wear any other time.

Decades later the brogue shoe is now a fashion statement and evolved even further with 4 different toe cap detailing patterning such as full or "wingtip", semi, quarter and longwing.

Full or “wingtip” brogues have a pointed detailing patterning toe cap that extends along both sides of the shoe and usually ends near the ball of the foot (middle). When seen from above the cap it is shaped like a ‘W’ or ‘M’ depending on your viewpoint. This is the most popular one you would see according to today’s fashion and trends.

A semi Brogue have a detailing patterning toe cap without extensions or wings that forms the W, or M.

A quarter brogue doesn’t have the detailing patterning toe caps with points and extensions or wings. The quarter brogue has detailing patterning only along the edge of the cap. Usually in form of a straight line across.

A longwing brogue is similar to the full or wingtip but rather than the detailing patterning toe cap that extends along both sides of the shoe and usually ends near the ball of the foot (middle). This goes all the way round the shoe so it makes it a longwing rather than a wingtip.

Brogues shoes are very versatile and in season all year round. They can be teamed up for a casual look like with a fitted t-shirt and jeans or look great for a smart casual look like with shirt and trousers.
